How to hack the Ironman Triathlon Race

Ironman competitions are gruelling and require not only skill and endurance, but also proper preparation, and forethought.

Here are some performance hacks to help you get ahead without taking your focus from the game.

Baby powder

This is a great resource that can be used in all three races. It’s drying quality is one of its best properties, and can be used after the swim, to quickly dry the body. For instance when putting on foot gear after the swim, you can use it to instantly dry the feet.

Rubberbands

During the biking event, having your shoes already set on the bike allows for a quicker transition. Use a rubber band to hold your shoe onto the bike (from the area above the chain), and the band will easily break on the first rotation.

Taping nutrition gels

Making sure your energy is kept strong is vital so you want quick access to your nutrition. Many just fill a bottle with these gels, but a lighter and less unbalanced method is to tape them on your bikes top tube. This makes it easy to pull one off and use it.

Baby Oil

Using baby oil can help with chafing, but it is also an excellent way to to help with the removal of a wetsuit, which tends to stick to the body.

Elastic laces

For your biking shoes, having elastic laces allows for you to slip them on easier (which are mounted on your bike). Make sure you know exactly how the laces need to be and use a lace lock, or no-tie laces. Otherwise might end up at the aid stations for a shoe tie.

Golf balls

A pair of golf balls can fill in for massaging devices. They are small and light. Some use tennis balls, but their texture easily snags and causes a jarring glide.

Water bottles

Empty water bottles are a great way to keep things dry like shammys and small towels. Even things like keys and gels held in a bottle is easier to fit in a bag, and of course keep dampness away.

Surf leash

A swim leash can create an endless pool when you are staying at a spot without a proper place to train and warm up. It only slightly affects one’s’ stroke, but not as much as you’d think.

Going beyond the Ironman

Roman soldiers used to train with heavier weapons and shields. They would also train in melee longer than they would before the next rank would take their place so they could rest.

Zip top

When transitioning from the wetsuit, the best top to change into is one with a zipper. Covering your upper body in baby powder isn’t the most efficient method. So a full zip, or at least 8-inch zipper is highly recommended.

Rolled Socks

Have your socks rolled and already fitted in your shoes for a quicker transition.

Mark your transition spot

This helps you get to your kit faster. Some use a balloon, some use a bright towel, but you can also use a neon zip tag or rag tied to your bike. Just make sure it’s something specific so your eyes will catch it.

These are just some of the numerous ideas to use for your next triathlon race. The most important thing is to always try these out before the actual event, no matter how simple the hack. Make these hacks a part of your training, and they will have a greater effect.
